Show awards you will fall into this category
We suggest
more special awards at the Host Clubs discretion, such as Best Sound System,
Most Practical, People’s Choice, Bright & Shine environmentally Safe (van
not running), etc. More awards can
stimulate more participation, which is good for vanning
The board
recommends that recipients of the “Best Of” trophy be limited to one
award. In order to “Spread the Wealth”
and create even further interest in participation.
Radical: Chopped,
Channeled, Sectioned, Shortened, or lengthened
*Common

The
Competition Committee Members will be on hand at the Nationalsâ Classification site to answer any
questions and make final decisions
Once
Classification is completed it becomes the responsibility of the Host Club
to transfer the
information in the classification binders to the judging sheets, setting up the
clip boards with groups of sheets per class to hand to the judges, tallying the
completed sheets and entering results back into the binders and then
transferring results to the awards presentation format and the actual
presentation of the awards. The Classification committee will be there to
get you started and be available to answer any of your questions. It is very helpful if the Host Club comes to
the proceeding Nationals to see how things are done. This way they have an idea how many people
they need and how much time to a lot to the process.

Judging
Special Awards
Best of
Awards should be judged by a separate group of judges. These are the hardest to determine. Since it is to include all the vans in the
show. There is an order to the Best
of’s. Best of Show is the
obviously the top of the list. The
Best overall van inside and out.
Best
Exterior: Is Best Customizing on the outside of
the van. This includes paintwork,
bodywork, accessories, (bolt on’s) and overall appearance. This would be the Best Exterior in the entire
show except the Best of Show Van.
Best
Interior: Judged on the Quality of the work. Layout, unusual features, practicality,
design and theme. Probably the most
difficult to determine because the range of the ideas and creativity is
enormous. Woodwork, upholstery,
electronics fit and finish and detail, pay attention to all of it. Don’t be afraid as a judge to look for the
things that aren’t finished or screwed together. I’ve seen interiors that have panels that aren’t
attached, doors that fall off, and carpet that isn’t attached. I don’t really count things that aren’t part
of the van. Knickknacks that are just
lying in the van and go in a box after the show is over. Best interior should be just that, not the decoration
thrown in just for the bling. If its not
part of the van, it doesn’t count here.
Again this would be awarded to the Best of All interiors if not the Best
of Show.
Best
Paint: If you are not a paint and body guy
you shouldn’t be judging this award. Best
Paint is not just picking the shiniest paint job. Best Paint includes all aspects of the
paintwork. Metallic, candy colors,
pearls, color fades, multi-hued colors, flips as well as layout, graphic
design, use of color, then there is the overall clear work, finish, buffing. Not to mention mural work, pin striping, gold
leaf and lettering.
There is the
quality of the work. Were parts removed to paint or just masked off? Does color carry through into the door jams
and under the hood? Are fades gradual or
abrupt? Are candy colors even, no light
or dark spots, are metallic mottled. Are there runs? Are there dull spots, etc. Do the colors work together? Are murals detailed? Does the paint job compliment the overall
shape of the van? It should complement
the body lines and bring out the body work.
Best Engine:
This should include the motor and engine bay. Not everything on a motor is attached to
it. This is one place you need to know
your engines. Has the engine been
changed, is it even the right brand (Chevy motor in a VW, say), has it been painted,
or powder coated? Are wiring and hoses
neat? Are there accessories that weren’t
available on that van? (i.e. power
steering and fuel injection, etc.)
Here is one
place that you must rely on the owner.
Internal engine mods. Lots of
guys will have a tech sheet listing these things. But get a feel from the owner on these
things. Most people love to talk about
their vans.
Best
Engineered: This is for mechanical mods. Engine, suspension, exhaust, system and
wheels. Look for custom made parts, Axel
changes, air ride suspension, how things work together, etc. Again, things
added to van that weren’t on it from the factory.
27
Best
electronics: Anything on the van that works
through electric wires. Not just stereo
or sound system, but that, plus lighting, TV/Video. Check for any electrical changes to the
motor. Gages and dash electronics. There are a lot of things to look for
here. Again, the owner could be a help
to you. Sharing with you a lot of the
“Behind the scenes”, changes.
Best
Theme: This is for how the Theme is carried
throughout the entire van. Accessories
and Decorations do count here. Does the
theme carry through the paint. Interior,
under the hood? Does it tell a
story? Are there Special Little Details?
There are several
awards that are sub categories of the others.
i.e. Best mural, Best Woodworking. Both are straight forward. You should have a rudimentary knowledge of
woodwork/cabinet making to judge this, but good woodworking is easy to spot.
The things
to look for in all of these are fit, finish and detail. We are mainly judging the Customization of
the van.
We have a
rule of limiting the Best awards to one per van. So the Best should follow the order listed
here. A van may be eligible for several
of these awards. Give the Van the
highest award it is eligible for. Our
goal is to get this right. So be thorough.
